It's not just the Pommy's Mate! Aussies pronounce it MUM too. Makes perfect sense to me though...
While your sitting there, say it out aloud very slowly, breaking it up into it's three basic syllables. M-U-M. Mum. Where's the problem here? It's written exactly how it sounds. Not even Spelling Bee material!
I HAVE seen it spelled a VERY peculiar way indeed though, in my travels. Can't remember where though. All I know is they spell it - M-O-M.
Say this version aloud now. Talk about peculiar!
M-U-M is supposed to rhyme with mop, not mug! It's no wonder literacy is becoming such a huge concern in the World today... I mean it's not the hardest word to spell is it, having only 3 letters!
Now that's, what I call a strange version of Mummy....
Oh...hang on, I think I've just worked it out. This is the correct answer to your question: The Aussies and the Brits just know how to spell!

For the same reason everyone else says mama, ma, mother, mom, etc. It simply depends on where you come from. There's no rule that says "mom" is correct. If that's what you call your mother, that's fine. But don't criticize people for what they call their parents.

The same reasons we (Americans, USA) call our mom's "mom".
It's just the way they pronounce and spell it.
