Call the magazine and ask them if you can use their patterns and sell them. If they say yes ask for written permission.

Sorry, it is illegal, though the designer will have a hard time catching you. If you go to a market that has a management, they won't rent space to you if you're doing someone else's patterns. If you do a regular craft fair, the other crafters will loudly ask you whose patterns you are using. They are so snarky that way! Mostly with knitting, the fun is in making it, so the stuff doesn't sell very well anyway.

Patterns from books and magazines, as well as many of the free ones on line are copyrighted and you are allowed to make them for personal use only, not to sell. This is INTERNATIONAL LAW. In order to sell items made from any pattern that is not your own absolute original pattern you must have permission from the owner of the copyright. As long as the copyright has been maintained intact by the publisher or designer, no matter how old it is, it is in force. Copyrights last the length of the designer's lifetime plus, in most countries, another 75 years.

it is unethical, I wouldn't go so far as to say "illegal". Someone else designed the pattern for a person to use for "personal use" not to make money off of their pattern. Now, some patternmakers may have a stipulation that as long as you let it be known that the pattern used was designed by so-&-so, then it *might* be okay, BUT that will vary from pattern-maker to pattern-maker. The same is true for ANY hobby. As an example, it even holds true for patterned scrapbook paper. If you make something out of pre-patterned paper, it may be illegal\unethical to sell that item. It all depends on the maker.

I don't think it's a good idea to sell an item that has been made exactly to the specifications of someone else's pattern. It's not necessary anyway when it's so easy to take a basic pattern and add your own touches with various stitches and colours. if you're an experienced knitter, you'll find this more satisfying anyway. You can mix and match techniques, colours, stitch patterns to create garments that are unique to you. The best of luck to you!

Contact the magazines, or designers who created the patterns for knitting which you are using to ask permission to use the patterns for making items for sale in craft fairs, etc.
Various companies have different copyright notices on their patterns, instructions, electronic machine embroidery files, clipart, electronic media, written media etc. Either the copyright notice will tell you what you may do, such as selling what you knitted from the instructions or you can contact the designer to see if they will give you permission. As a small craft biz, you are not selling nor maunfacturing in mass quantity, so they might give you permission.
I'm not a lawyer, this topic would be best anseered by legal advice, maybe a group or forum on Needle Arts, that discusses these issues that the home crafter needs answered by experts.

It is illegal unfortunately, because the actual pattern is copyrighted, meaning that anything you make from it, you own the materials, but you don't own the way you put it together, so you can't sell it. Why don't you try developing the patterns that you are knitting from to create your own that it is legal to sell?

NO its not illegal, i used to work the markets in the midlands area up until my husband passed away recently, there was a market stall holder who did the same as you and he did pretty well out of it, but he did need to employ other ladies for the extra orders he kept having. All the best with your venture but be warned! Dress to keep warm.

No, it's not illegal.
If you want to have a stall on your own you may need more than you can do on your own so may need to get a few friends to start knitting as well.
Good luck to you. It's good to find someone with a bit of get up and go!
