Make sure a trust worthy adult is with them. Warn them against going into people's houses. If there's a 'haunted house' that's dark, make sure you're with them, holding their hands.
It's a sad commentary that we have to be so paranoid with our children. Trick or treat is supposed to be scary but they should be scared of ghosts and goblins, not adults.
Trish, your generalization about the left is one of the lamest I've ever read.

First off, the media likes to make it sound as tho there are sexual predators and pedophiles around ever corner. Relax. Your kids are probably perfectly safe. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful.

Make sure they understand the rules. Don't let them go into anyone's house, keep them on your street, warn them not to talk to strangers and have them stay with a group.

If you still feel uncomfortable, go with them. The vast majority of the time trick or treating is very safe. Just use common sense.

The same as I am doing , I am going with my kids , and I am carrying a Louisville Slugger , ..if I catch someone eyeballing or approaching any child out there in the wrong manner , I am popping a clutch , and cleaning their clocks ...... The law may be scared of putting them away , but I am not , I will knock the sh*t out of them ...they do not need to be out , actually they do not need to be breathing once they are convicted ...

Trish , you need to lay off the Halloween crack , GOP was in power for a while and did nothing .....democrats can not do anything without a tax hike , so either way neither side has done nothing , and they won't do anything until it happens to their own children ...Luckily here I do not stand before a liberal judge , so when I crack a skull of a pervert , the judge knows me , and why I did it , and for defending a child , I get charged with assault and battery , and pay a fine , with no jail time due to the circumstances surrounding the case ...it has gotten expensive , I am up to 9 misdemeanor charges , and the fines are about 600 dollars , but that is a small price to pay when defending a child , plus I do as the liberal courts do , I catch them , offer them verbal therapy , pat them upside the head , and let them go ...I do it in a day , where as it takes liberal courts years ..

Its a little late, but you could do some research to check to archives to see if you live near any registered sex offenders. Also, some communities also keep public records of other types of convictions. Check your local police precinct as well. It is always safe to have an escort with your children. Also, if it is a small community/neighborhood you live in, get a group of kids to go together (if they are by themselves). Organize a neighborhood watch to keep after them and keep them safe. Also, if you have a large group of kids, rotate chaparons each year, so that way if your kids dont think its cool to hang out with mom and dad for trick or treat, then they may like it with someone else's parents, while still providing protection.

A responsible guide who is reliable and honest , should accompany the kids both in the beginning and closing of school, hours , if the parents could not accompany them daily. And other times , the children should not be allowed to go out alone. The antecedents of the guides who accompany the kids to drop them at the school, should be thoroughly verified and local police should have a list of such guides.

Go with them dressed as Chuck Norris. Any potential predators will have to think twice just in case you really are The Chuck. In any event, Chuck Norris has monitors on all likenesses of him, just to make sure even the image of him doesn't appear weak. Therefore, anything untowards happening in the vicintiy of a Chuck Norris costume is dealt with severely by The Chuck himself.

As always, just tell them never to enter someone's house. Or better yet, why don't you walk with them? This is getting ridiculous. We act like pedophiles have just erupted.

I agree with the other answers about going with them. Just in general though you may want to find out if there's a database online for sex offenders in your area. search "sex offender [your city/state]" & it should be one of the first links if your area has one. But keep in mind those are just registered sex offenders (ie one's who were caught).

You can at least see where the reported sexual offenders are: http://www.familywatchdog.us/

Obviously, that isn't 100%, but it's a start.
