When you hold two magnets close together they bond.

However when you move these magnets around each other there seems to be some resistence between them.

Could any boffins tell me what causes this and also what it is called?

it's called polarity
magnets have a positive end and a negative end
positive to negative attracts
positive to positive or negative to negative repels

Magnets have a north and south pole. If you put like poles together they repel. If you put opposite poles together they attract.
