It is not illegal to ask.

Thats like saying its illegal for someone to ask you for your credit card number...

Its never been illegal to ask...

Its just common knowledge that it is not safe to give those things out due to identity theft.

Some companies need your SSN to verify you are who you say you are, and some companies are trustworthy with that information. But others are not.

The best option when being asked for your SSN, is to ask if there is another way for them to verify you, as you dont want to give out critical identiy information.

It is illegal to ask for the full SSN. They are only allowed to ask for the last for digits as a means of identification. It used to be your mother's maiden name, but half the time, people can't remember that. They can remember their SSN.

You know the link you posted - the Michigan one, says on the website that it is not illegal. The other one is a proposed solution to identity theft. Loan applications ask it, job applications, all types of places. It may be stupid to answer the question, but it isn't illegal to ask. It is illegal for to require it. How could the make it illegal?

I'm glad I live in Australia. Some companies like to see your driver's license but that's about it. Nor do we have a SSN.

They are only allowed to asked for the last 4 of your number.
You have every right to NOT to give it to people over the phone. Especially don't give it on line.

It is not ILLEGAL to ask. You misread your information. It is ILLEGAL to REQUIRE the information be given. They can ask you all they want, but they cannot refuse you service if you choose not to give it to them.
