I assume it refers to how is Down syndrome passed to a child from parents. Down syndrome is a genetic abnormality caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome. It is named after John Langdon Down, the British doctor who described it in 1866.

down syndrome is a genetic anomaly that occurs in 1 out 800 live births. it can happen to any woman at any age, though studies have shown that the risks are higher in mothers over 35 yrs old. there are three types of DS trisomy 21 where all the cells in the body have an extra 21st chromosome and is the most common 95%, Mosaics where only certain cells in the body have an extra chromosome only 2% this happens because faulty cell division occurs after fertilization. and Translocation which is rare and happens in 3% of the babies born with down syndrome that results from a condition in the parent's genes. hope this helps....
