My lady is from New York City. I'm originally from Georgia, but she and I now live in Charlotte, North Carolina.
I've visited NYC several times. It's a fun city to visit, and there are certainly lots of things to do, but it's too dirty & too crowded for me. I'm not going to stereoype New Yorkers as being unfriendly, but NYC has a higher percentage of brash people...The toll booths are a pain too.
I'm a Southern boy and used to Southern Hospitality. The people in NC are friendlier. It's cleaner down here. There are more open spaces. In the big cities in NC, there is still a good bit to do. And in a transient city like Charlotte, the population is diverse, you'll find folks who are from all over the place, which makes for more diverse businesses, restaurants, and other forms of entertainment. But it still has a Southern feel.
More people are migrating from NYC to NC than vice versa. That should tell you a good bit right there.

I lived in New York City and I can tell you what I hated about it.
1. Too much crime.Robberies are outrageous.
2. Too crowded
3. Too many mentally ill people roaming the streets
North Carolina is not too crowded and the people are friendly. Also you can find areas is little crime.

North Carolina, because the last time we came to The States we couldn't keep to our planned itinerary, there had just been a hurricane.
Instead of doing The Carolinas we drove around New England (from DC - then down to Cape Cod, then back up to Niagara because we got back too soon!!). Bar Harbour was lovely by the way.
So...we have yet to see The Smokey Mountains!

Duh? North Carolina...whats so exciting in that place. of course hands down(no contest) New York City would be a more exciting place to visit. But if you have a loved one in North Caroline, theres no need to ask that questions here.

North Carolina because there is too much crime in NYC. Also, it's closer to where I live.
