I like areas in a garden where you can sit. Rather than decking which requires maintenance, I would prefer some sort of patio, preferably with brick sunk into the earth in a decorative pattern.
I like decking if the house is set on a hill, and the deck(s) projects out from the house. The garden can be all around that area, including overhanging or nearby trees. It can be very attractive.
You might like to research Japanese gardens. They are great decking people!! Beautiful
stuff and designed with great sensitivity to the surrounding environment.

To paraphrase "America's Master Handymand" Glenn Hage, "The deck is a four letter word that lives in your back yard."
It's a pain in the toot to keep looking good. I think a garden needs places to stop, sit and contemplate. How big is up to how you plan to use the area, how many people you expect will be there at one time, etc. Until you feel you have exactly the right spot and size, use crushed stone for the sitting area. That way you can adjust and then make it more permanent with stone, brick, concrete.

No - I hate decking. A garden should be a garden. Decking is just a haven for rats and a death trap in frost.

My daughter had a serious accident on her decking, she rand to answer the phone, in trainers on a damp deck, she slipped hit her cheek on a brick wall of a raised bed and ended up having a metal plate put into her cheek to stop her face caving in. Needless to say the decking has gone.

Plan the area in your garden ( for decking) before attempting to set it up , otherwise it will look a shambles and you will tire of it quickly

I agree with Dennis.
Decking can be a great asset to a garden if planned out well.
A lot better looking as opposed to a concrete or paved patio.
Wood blends in more as it's natural elegance compliments the garden.....;-)

I do like a bit of decking or should I say I liked the idea until I was told it attracts rats. Apparently they like to nest under them.....NO WAY.
So big thumbs down!
