Ok basically i leave my computer on over night alot and one day i woke up too see it turned off. I went to press the on button and the computer just goes on for 1 second then off again. The lights go on during that time but nothing is displayed on the monitor. Not even a beep sound from the motherboard is made.
My question is should i get a new motherboard ? i fitted a brand new power supply but that didnt help. Thanks for your time

It sounds like a software shutdown. Try re-installing your operating system. With XP that is a ***** - it always messes up. I had to just do a destructive format and do an install of XP. But then you lose all your programs and data. Unless you backed then up!

Before you go with a new system board, try the following.
Remove or unplug everthing in the computer, all cards, drives, etc, including the memory. Leave only the power supply and processor. Boot it and see what happens.
If it stills goes out in a second or two, then it is the board and/or processor.
If it stays on or beeps, then it is one of the other pieces of hardware. Turn off, insert memory, and try again. Repeat piece by piece until eith the PC is running or you identify the bad hardware.
If it is the system board, you are probably also looking at replacing the processor. The old one probably will not fit the new board. Also possibly the memory. By the time you price them, you may find that you can buy a "stripped down" PC - no hard drive, CD drive, etc. for less then replacing the board.
Good luck....

Hmm I am no professional, but I have had similar problems. You might not have a good wall socket first off, then it might be a short somewhere {doubtful], or like you wondered the motherboard, or maybe your new power supply is bad, .....stranger things have happened. I bought a brand spanking new computer with a bad power supply. I don't know allot but that's something to chew on. lol

1. Disconnect AC power cord. 2. Ground yourself to the chassis using a wrist strap or improvise using a metal bracelet / watch band and a clip lead. 3. Remove the dust; a vacuum cleaner is best, as blowing at it can drive the stuff into connectors & other areas you don't want. 5. remove the cards and dust them off; clean their edge connector with alcohol (water will do if allowed to thoroughly dry with a little heat). 6. With the cards out, use the vacuum to remove dust from the card connectors and other interior areas now accessible. 7. If brave, remove & reseat the CPU. 8. Put the cards back in and reconnect anything disconnected earlier. 9. Say a brief prayer and fire up the PC; with luck, your problems are over.

If your computer is not working properly when it is switched on, there is a hardware problem, could also be a power supply problem . Most of these problems can be solved by just opening up the computer and removing the dust . Detailed instructions at http://fixit.in/computerbeep.html

I had a bios issue which meant my machine wouldn't statrt. The lights came on and the fan did too, but no video or beep.
I took it to a knowledgable person who reset the bios and it worked again.

Take it to a local computer repairer and get them to test it. If it needs a new mother board they can fit it or if you need a new PC they can sell it to you. At least you will save some cash.

Does your processor's sink fan still work? It may have overheated.
