Why is it the British are so pretentious?
...are you still bitter about 1776?

Even if our heads are empty...our hearts are full...and we can still kick England's A**!

I agree that we are a very superficial society in which the amount of respect a person gets is usually directly proportional to how they look. Everyone knows that, so everyone does the best they can to enhance their looks so that they can get that confidence and respect.

But its NOT an America thing. I spent a week in London 2 years ago they were the most superficial, snobbish people I've ever encountered. The British are FAR more superficial than us and that's saying a lot.

Good morning! Most of us just want to be clean, well-groomed, etc. I'm athletic and sweat a lot. So, I make sure I shower, wear extra deodorant, clean clothes, etc. I don't spend 2 hours on hair, makeup, beauty routines. I make sure my haircut/style is professional and ready within 10 minutes. I feel beauty is from within, so I try to take care of my health within my budget. I like clean clothes because I sweat when running all over the office and city. I've been in countries where it was very difficult to find a coin-operated washing machine -- I would just handwash my clothes. There were small market places (in other countries) where I could not find laundry detergent, deodorant/anti-perspirant, etc.) -- I just did the very best I could with the situation. Best wishes! :)

Hey, chill out. I haven't seen any Americans coming on here and asking rude questions about British people, and lord knows there's plenty of stereotypes we could pick on.

America is ruled by money. When you have money you can buy all of the things to make you more beautiful, expensive clothes, etc. We idolize the people who are able to do that (ie celebrities), and everyone wants to follow suit. I'm not saying I agree with it, but it's the way it is.

Because we don't live an a country built on the equality of everyone being ugly. We have to be obsessed because it's one of the ways we get ahead in life.

And then to completely contradict that and propose another answers...

I see all sorts of posts call the Americans fat and lazy. So if we're so damn dumpy how do you get off thinking we're obsessed with our appearances?

Choose your own answer. Is it because we've got the most beautiful people in the world to compete with, or is your question invalid?

Genralizing is always a mistake. Not all Americans are obsessed with how they look. I would have to say there are vain people in all of the world. If I think I look good and my husband agrees that is all that matters.

This does not apply to Americans alone vanity is everywhere.
neither does vanity imply empty headedness. Some intelligent people are also vain.
I am an Aussie and have never met an American but I sure do know a lot of vain people and people who ask racist questions. Racism like vanity is everywhere.

no its because of television. have you ever watched beauty and the geek. It encourages stupidity and looks are more important than humbleness and brains.
