1. Make sure you change locations every night, perhaps even in different cities if you live in a place like Los Angeles/ Orange County.
2. Keep a LOW profile. Don't piss outside your van, for example. Don't play music, just drive, park, go inside the van and stay there. Bringing any kind of attention to yourself will be dangerous.
3. Things like this can be easy to get used to. Make sure you get adequate shelter soon.

I would suggest not to do this. Many jurisdictions have laws against "outdoor camping" or some other non-offensive word for being homeless and living outside. So even if there aren't any explicit laws about living outside, they could still find a way to get you.

I think there's a law against it (there are rules against just about everything) and yet many people sleep in their vehicles or under bridges, etc.

Yes, they would want you to go to a shelter. If you must, make sure you're off from people so they can't say your trespassing, loitering, or disturbing the peace. Please be safe and warm. Have a Campbell's day!
