I would love to do something like set design, or even some directing, but how likely am I to get a job. I don't expect to go to Broadway and make hundreds of thousands of dollars or anything like that. Just wondering what kind of opportunities might be available on a smaller scale?

ungirl, to start in theater you must start at the very bottom,
painting sets, as they say, what ever menial tasks are to be done. you will have to do if it's running out for coffee or taking out the trash that's your job. you'll take orders from the gofer who did it before you came.if you do get the job i guarantee that you will love it

Start out at your local theater and volunteer there. Try out to be an assistant to the director or producer or stagecraft manager first so you get first-hand knowledge about what you are doing. Also you can take all kinds of theater courses at your local college: acting, directing, stage production, etc. And don't forget Children's theater productions! Puppet shows! Street Theater. Have fun and good luck.

For a smaler skale, you should try to do something like working on the stage, or in the back, in other words, THE DIRTY WORK. You have to start small. Try doing something like stage setting and then see if you like it. It could be very rought....As u progress you can move on to bigger jobs.
Bigger jobs =$$$
