In my old house I had gas central heating put in, and the house was lovely and warm. The heating was never on high and it was quite reasonable to run, I have since moved to a house that has electric heating and its awful. It costs far more to run and Its never as warm as my old home, If I could afford it I would have it ripped out and replaced with gas, without a doubt.

Over the years we've had several different types of central heating....solid fuel, electric storage heaters and gas. Without doubt we would say gas is the one we prefer. Electric storage heaters are ok but the whole thing about them storing the heat is that it's stored one day to be used the following day and we always found that they can be difficult to control. Solid fuel is mucky with the coal dust etc., and be honest, coal or wood fires are lovely in the winter to curl up besides but all that cleaning and lugging the coal in on a cold wet, blowy winter night is not the least bit nice. Yes, gas is definately our preference. The problem also arises with which supplier will give you the best value for money. We've been with Powergen for over 6 yrs and we've never had a problem with them. We tend to pay more than is needed on Direct Debit and when we have a lot in credit that we know we won't need we "cash" it in! Take for example the last bill we got which was last week we were £123 in credit and we phoned Powergen n asked if we could have £80 of it back.....they were more than happy to organise it for us n it'll be back in our account by Friday. But there are some people who seem to have had problems with this company so it is all a matter of personal preference really. Whichever type of central heating you have and whichever supplier too try and ensure that if you get an estimated bill you take the readings and either phone them through or email them because it is very easy to get in a pickle with it. If you leave the estimations you could end up with a massive bill that you cannot afford to pay.

I was terrified of gas (not used to it), and when I moved in to a house with gas central heating it took me ages to get used to it. The worst part about it is having to have an air vent, which doesn't just let the air in, but all the dust, pollution and fumes from traffic along with it - disgusting.
I cuddle up with a hot water bottle for as long as I can.

Electric is usually more expensive than gas, oil fired central heating comes in between as far as cost is concerned I believe.

The cheapest and most reliable seems to be Gas but its only a personal view I can not quote facts.
