Be sure you are getting enough sleep to start with then take a nap just before you go to work.
Try different things to figure out what helps you stay awake. Audio books, game books, reading, needlepoint, whatever works for you.
Eat lightly, stay away from sugar. But I must confess I love my caffein.
Definately get up and move around, of course you must be making rounds but in between stretch, walk briskly up and down the hallways move around are regular times.
And Kudos to you for watching over these patients!!

Coffee isn't always the answer because coffee reacts differently to people body. If you choose this vehicle, drink straight black. Some people buy chocolate candy bars, energy drinks, noz doz, etc. Best remedy is planning what time you go to sleep before going to work. My sister works from 10:00 pm - 6:30 am with 2 children. Shes hardy tire. Her first bed rest 8:00 until 1:00 Her second bed rest 5:00 up by 8. She gets to spend a hour or two with her children.
Planning/organizing is the key. If you don't put these two enforce, you will encounter to stumbling, such as a lack of sleep.
Yes sometimes we all finish our work assignments early before we get off, if you have access to the internet between time, go online to play games, if not, bring a dvd player (portable) to work, or buy some game books...

Time management is the core of your solution

I work 6 to 6 days and nights. What ever you do don't sit down. I listen to audio books while I work, stay busy with my hands, read, go over pet projects on paper, don't turn on a heater and get cold, don't use the bathroom and have pressure on your bladder.I used to drive a haul truck at a mine. When I got tired I'd hit my forearms on the steering wheel. During lunch I'd stay awake and go for a little run, get my blood pumping. And the best thing I could do is to listen to to talk radio, something really interesting. Wake up one of your patients and have a conversation, I'm sure they won't mind.. Just stay busy doing something while at work.

Caffeine rich products (coffee, coke, green cordial, energy drinks) ; products that increase your metabolism (chilli, mustard seeds, peppers) ; alternatively - there is a natural herbal remedy called NRG (its based on guarana - which is also a natural herb) .... if you try sports drinks though, I would only do one a night (too many can cause hyperphalactic fits).
Coconut meat is a great source of energy and coconut milk is highly nutritious - if you can locate 'drinking coconuts' (also called young or immature coconuts) you may prepare it for a snack to take to work with you.

Try to keep yourself busy.... if you sit down.. do stretches or something to keep yourself active while relaxing. Chew gum or suck on hard candy... not only does it give your jaw a work out.. but it repeats a pattern which you'll keep yourself busy with. Try the old coffee routine.. or energy drink. Or get plenty of rest and drink lots of water and you should find yourself with a little extra energy.

Drinking coffee will keep you awake. When you go home have a shower and breakfast and sleep eight hours so you get into the routine and you wont sleep at nite.
