Hi i bought my sony vaio vgn-tx17gp last year in Thailand from a sony shop.
The wireless was working fine until few days ago. I can see all networks including mine. However the red cross is on at the bottom of the wireless icon and it wont connect.

Check the red X, right click. and be sure it is not "Disabled"
You can click to enable if it shows disabled.
If that is NOT the problem.
Be SURE you have the wireless radio TURNED ON!!!
These do have a switch to disable it, I don't remember if it is a physical or key switch but there is one. If the wireless is not enabled you get what you say you are seeing.

try right click Repair connection
update your driver
