He is about 18 days old today.

Is this normal? Could it be that his eyesight hasnt developed properly yet or could it be a sigh of autism?

Sorry i hope this isnt a daft question but its been worrying me. i have one daughter already but i seem to remember more eye contact with her.

I would still say this is normal. Some babies seem inherently more social than others, so this could be a personality difference between your two children. Some babies are easily overstimulated and even gazing into mom's face may be a bit much.

My son has been tested for autism and aspbergers, and poor eye contact has been an issue with him. However, we didn't start noticing his developmental delays for a few months, and he had other issues that surfaced long before his lack of eye contact became a concern. It is really too early for you to start worrying about autism. ;)

It dosn't take a lot of stimulation to satisfy a baby. It could just be that he is slightly overstimulated expecially if he is tired or has just woke. I would keep an eye on him for the next couple weeks and if it is still a concern talk to you dr. at your next well baby check up. Most vision problems are undetectable at this age. It will take a few months for his eyes to develop to where the dr. can really tell if there is a problem.
So for now I would not worry about it. Good luck.

No, this is completely normal. My son was the exact same way. In fact, my family was mentioning that thought it wasn't normal. The doc told me up until about 1 month they can barely see anything and it's very hard to focus. After 1 month he got much, much better. He's now 4 months old and has been making contact for quite sometime and gives us BIG smiles. Don't worry. It's completely normal. It must be a guy thing, ha ha.

it is normal... most babies this young focus on the hairline, due to the sharp contrast in colors there. Also, it may be that he is overstimulated. babies will look away as a way of coping when they are feeling overwhelmed.

Dont worry about autism...it is WAY to early to diagnose such a disorder....I have worked with these children in the past.

Just keep doing what you are doing and you will see an increase in eye contact over the next few weeks. If you still have concerns, talk to your ped. They are there for these types of questions from worried moms!!!

Following birth, your newborn may be quite content to simply gaze into your eyes as you hold him in your arms. It's exciting to know that during those first moments of bonding, your baby is seeing your face very clearly, as long at you're about eight to twelve inches away and directly in front of your baby. As for colors, at birth babies see colors that are very bright and contrasting. Their full color vision is not developed until about 3 to 4 months of age, when they can determine hues and light shades. While vision problems are rare in newborns, some babies experience difficulties.

Another concern parents may have with newborn vision is strabismus or crossed eyes, affecting about 5% of all children. Many newborns eyes appear to wander because they haven't yet learned to focus their vision, which is why crossed eyes are rarely cause for concern until a baby is at least a four months of age. If vision hasn't improved by then and your baby's eyes still appear to cross or wander out, you should have your baby examined by an eye specialist. If strabismus isn't properly treated, permanent vision impairment could result.

I Pray for your Kids good health..

It's nothing to worry about at the moment, babies can't focus properly for a while. I thought that my daughter now 16 weeks old had a problem to start with but it was just new born eyes everything has been fine for a while now. So don't stress just yet he should grow out of it.

Yes, it's true that one of the initial signs of autism spectrum is a lack of eye contact. at 18 days, your baby can pretty much only see the distance from your breast to your face. be patient, it takes a while for these things to develop.

Observe him and if it doesn't change in a couple of months take him to the pediatrician. It may be a sign of something that need to be checked and the sooner the better. At 18 Days its too early to tell anything but they should respond to you within 2 months.
