well to start, you have a carburetor, which means you're right, you don't have a computer. i would put flowmasters on it, with a dual plane edelbrock intake manifold like someone said, and if you've got the money, a higher CFM carb. The one you've got is probably the stock quadra-jet, if you put an edelbrock carb on there, to match the manifold, you'd get much more power. If you've got an open rear end (only spins one tire) then i'd invest in a 3.73 posi if you've got the money.

To start, go with a newer intake manifold and carb. I would go with a dual plane manifold unless you plan on revving the motor a lot. Dual plane will give you better low-end power, but usually don't work well above around 4500 rpm.

If it is a town only truck and you don't need any highway manners, you could swap the axle gears for a higher ratio, you will get more power to the ground so it will be quicker from a stop, but loose top end speed.

Doing the gears will cost more because you will have to do the front and rear axle so that they match.

well thats cool what everyone says but before you do anything you need to upgrade your exhaust. I would do headers first then maybe some flows. as for the carb. don't go with anything to big. get maybe a 600 or 650 cfm carb unless your are planning on upgrading the cam. i'm getting the eldebrock 600 cfm (1406). I do have the upgraded headers through hooker. But seriously always upgrade the exhaust first. think if you upgrade the motor wheres all that back pressure going to go. you can ask almost any shop and they'll tell you to do the exhaust first.

Ok a 22 year old truck will need a ton of money and work. I would start with a frame off restoration if not a front fender off restoration. Check for performance 500 cubic inch crate motor headers carb 400TH trans stronger transfer case drive shafts and front and rear axles. Good Luck $$$$$$
