I think she may just want to see how willing you are to leave your comfort zone to please her. Sort of a test. If you let yourself enjoy the pampering without letting your fragile male ego interfere, you guys will have fun and she'll be impressed with you're good attitude. If you stubbornly refuse, she'll be disappointed and think you're less than willing to put yourself out on the line for her behalf.
To answer your second question, not all girls would make that specific request, but I do think that girls test the men they are in relationships with. We want to see what you're made of, how you respond to less-than-ideal situations, and how you'll treat us even when you're unhappy.

It's her birthday & she wants you to have some fun with her, big deal, it's just a salon, you're getting a makeover, you not going to walk in her boyfriend & leave as her girlfriend, so just get your facial, don't forget to tell them to use clear nail polish when you get your manicure and pedicure.

it happen man. girls just wanna have fun. tell ya what, take her to a salon on her b'day for da pedi-man-wateva cures and on your b'day, insist on going to watch a cricket/football match in a sports bar with special beer coupons! :) after all, everybody enjoys different things dude!
oh yeah, by da way, all girls DO NOT enjoy hanging in the salon like lizards. i told my bf to buzz off when he turned up on my b'day with 1kg chocolates(i hate belgian chocs) and discount coupons to tressbay salon.

Forget All that shes testing you mess and stuff like that..going to the spa is a relaxing activity ...ii believe that she just wants to spend time with you on her birthday and what better way to do that than going to the spa..she probably wants to take it slow and enjoy her day easily with you...ii mean its not like she or you gets to go to the spa on a daily,weekly,montly basis..... this is your chance to really bond and connect..so you should GO..its not going to be all girly..Trust me!! Youll probably be the one really enjoying yourself
