without using a sewing machine? I don't sew but do know how to make a straight stitch, chain stitch. Can someone explain this in detail for a project I am doing. Thanks

I did a search for "sewing buttonholes by hand" and got several results, but of the few I looked at, this one seemed to give a little more info.

I suppose you could make one by hand if you're patient. It would be a lot easier to find a friend who has a sewing machine with a buttonhole attachment.

You can try using a wide embroidery type stitch to stitch the outer edges of the buttonhole. But be sure to do it in a tight circle, and leave enuf room to cut the hole last with a razor blade, after the sewing's done.

just fold the material and the cut a sliver and then you will have to thread around that so that it doesnt come unraveled
