I have a window unit heater/AC in my apartment. However, my smoke alarm turns on within minutes of me turning on my heater. The AC works fine on the same unit, just "heat mode" sets off the alarm. Any suggestions? I asked my apartment but they're taking forever, so I thought I'd come here...

The dust and lint accumulation on the coils are heated, dryed and whiffed into the airstream. Clean and vacuum the unit, before heat is required seasonal wise.

I assume that with the gas heater you also have a CO detector. A smoke alarm will not respond to CO. A guess would be that the new heater has paint and oil that is causing the smoke alarm. If that is the case it will burn off in a short time and the alarms will stop. If you house is new and still under warranty have it checked. If you are concerned have call a heating shop and have them come look at it. If you don't have a CO alarm along with the smoke detector you should get one.

My central unit does the same thing every winter when I turn it on the first time of the season. As someone already said, it's due to the accumulation of dust and lint burning off the coils when you turn it on. Try disconnecting your smoke alarm briefly, then running the heater for a few minutes to burn off the dust and stuff. Be sure to stay home while you do this. This should do the trick. Hook your smoke alarms back up, then see if the alarms continue to go off. If they do, something else is causing the problem.

If the "heater" is electric, it should not cause the smoke alarm to go off unless the alarm is placed too close to the heater. Is the alarm also a carbon monoxide detector?

It may be dirt on the electric heating element inside the unit. Check to make sure nothing has been pulled inside the air inlet on the unit. For more info, check out the window ac page at www.hvac-for-beginners.com

Is it a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide alarm? If the latter DON"T run it. You need to replace it or you may die from the silent killer.
