The best Tolkien artists, hands down, are Greg and Tim "The Brothers Hildebrandt". Their 3 calendars from the late seventies are widely considered to be the Alpha and Omega of Tolkien art and were heavily drawn upon for certain elements included in the movies. Alan Lee is the next best, and he actually worked as a conceptual and artistic designer for the films.

They are 3 seperate films becasue they were 3 seperate books. The movies are actually quite condensed compared to the books, so if you were to shorten them into one film, you would lose a ton of vital info and storyline.
