Never leave the heat on 24 hours a day unless you're prepared to shell out a lot of money. Also, it's a huge waste of energy. Your schedule seems like a good one, but you could extend the pm hours to something like 4-8 or 9. And always do have a sweater handy.

if you fit thermostatic radiator valves and have all the rads balanced the house should get warm all over within an hour and stay like that for upto 3 hours depending on the energy effiency of your home. An unbalanced system will send water along the shortest path and circulate that way constantly, balancing restricts flow in certain places to ensure full circulation. 24hrs will cost a fortune. your timer is about right.

My Dad invented the electronic set back thermostat. I worked in HVAC for 4 years. You should set it to come on about a 1/2 hour before your alarm goes off, and about 15 min. before you leave for the day. Drop it about 10-15 degrees for the day. Set it to come on about 15 min or so before you come home for the evening, If the kids are still cold in their rooms, get some duct boosters. They are little fans that come on when your furnace comes on. They are installed in the run that goes to their individual rooms. good luck.

It's nice to have the heating on when you get up, and when you get home.
But unless you're in the Highlands of Scotland, it's not really that cold at the moment. (And they say it will get warmer this week). Tell the kids to put on an extra fleece, or go out and do something energetic in the park.
