The truck makes a loud clicking noise and one mechanic stated that it is probably a thrown rod but without pulling the engine there is no way to find out. I really just want to know if I should be driving it, if so how long? And what could possibly happen later.

It can' bust a hole in the block, damage the fly wheel etc.! Not long. You will have to rebuild or get a new one either way.

if your engine has thrown a rod its a miracle it still runs
this type of damage generally seizes the motor
if it still runs and has the same power as before have another mechanic look at it
the problem maybe much simpler like a lifter sticking or a loose bolt on the exhaust
