An example is this: "The arch of an underpass is a semi-ellipse 60 ft. wide and 20 ft. high. Find the clearance at the right edge of a lane if the edge is 20 ft. from the middle."It took me hard to find another one of this. Pls. help me especialy to those who are Math Whiz. Pls help me. This is our project in analytic geometry. Thank you and good day!

Hi,

If this ellipse was assumed to have its center at the origin, then its equation is:

..x².........y²
------.+.------ = 1
900.....400

Since the distance the entire way across the ellipse is 60 feet, then half of that distance is 30 feet. This is the value of "a". Since it is 20 feet high, the value of "b" is 20 feet.

If you substitute 20 into this equation for x and solve for y, y will equal 14.907. The height of the ellipse at the edge of the roadway is 14.907 ft.
