The crater lake on Mt Ruapehu is above the snow line in winter, and is surrounded by snow in winter and loose rock and soil in summer (with a few remnant glaciers nearby).
The volcano is still quite active, and erupts on occasions. If there is a lot of water vapour and gas givenn off during a mild eruption, the water in the lake can boil and overflow. When this happens, the water can flow over the edge of the lake and mix with the snow and ice and loose soil, and form a rapidly moving mud slide (called a lahar), which can flow down the sides of the volcano. The last time this happened was a few years ago, when the mud slide flowed down through the ski slope area. Fortunately, it was in summer, so there was no one on the slopes. If it had happened in winter, there could have been many deaths.

Eruption detecting instuments have ben fitted, to give warning or any impending eruption, to give people the chance to move to higher ground.

In 1953, during winter (before the ski resorts were established), the volcano erupted, and the water overflowed the lake, melting the snow and ice and sending a tremendous flow of mud and water rushing down the slope. It reached the foot of the mountain with tremendous force, just in time to wash the Tangiwi Bridge away at the very worst time; when the midnight express fron Auckland to Wellington was approaching the bridge. Many people were drowned. This (the Tangiwi disaster) still remains as New Zealand's greatest natural disaster.

It seems to be a question about New Zealand, as far as I can make out. Rangitoto is apparently a volcanic island while Mount Taranaki and Ruapehu are other volcanoes. The questions seem to be:

Why do the shapes of Rangitoto and Taranaki differ so strongly from each other? Which problems are posed by the crater lake on Ruapehu, and what efforts are made to manage them?
