Depends on the board. some can some can't. Go to your motherboards website and look at its cpu support page and see. If it shows the quad you'll have to make sure you have at least the bios needed to run that quad. If you don't you'll have to flash your bios with the old cpu in before you swap it with the new one. Also make sure that, if the quad shows it needs a certains revision of your board that you have at least that revision of the board. As an example the Asus P5LD2 board only runs single core cpus but the P5LD2 revision 2 board will run core 2 duos.

Very possible if you pair it with a compatible motherboard. If your motherboard is 2 years old, it may not even support Core2 Duo at all. Q6600 only has 1066mhz fsb but only newer 1066fsb boards support quad cores.

Make sure your mainboard support it. (FSB1333) check with your mainboard website.
Pentium duo core is only FSB800.
Quad Core is FSB1333
make sure u get a real FSB1333 board (lot of it r overclocked)
So, Check the mainboard chipset.
Use CPU-z (www.cpuid.com) to check your mainboard.
It will try u which chipset u r using. Then check with the chipset info from net.
