Is that the latest doomsday date that people are watching? The problem with any doomsday dates are that they assign an exact date to an inexact measure.
The calendar we have now is not the calendar that existed in ancient times. The Romans had to add the months of July (Julius Caesar) and August (Agustus Caesar) after they learned of a 12 month calendar in Egypt.
They didn't know about the need for leap year (or another treatment at the end of a century that is not a millenium), so the calendar was weeks off in the 1800's - the world all jumped forward a few weeks to catch up, losing some dates that "never happened". This caused all sorts of chaos as individual communities at first refused to follow the lead.
Even the year #1, the beginning of our existing calendar, is possibly in error - some argue that Jesus wasn't born until around 6AD, others question the placement of January 1.
So if we don't know exactly when the calendar should have begun, and there have been so many revisions to the calendar over the years, how can anyone pinpoint and exact date with any real certainty?

12-21-12 is the last day of the Mayan Calendar that is supposed to be the end of the world. The Mayans had an uncanny ability to read the stars and 12-21-12 is not only the winter's solstice, but a time when all the planets are lined up too.
So, they predicted that 12-21-12 will be a terrible day. The funny thing is, the Mayan calendar repeats itself in 40 year cycles.
How do we know this date? Of all the books that the Mayans had published, only 4 survived their conversion to Christianity. The calendar was one of the four books. Had the Mayans been allowed to live in peace, would they have published another calendar? Or, was there another calendar that extended past 12-21-12?
Regardless of what happens on 12-21-12, the world will not end.
