I start to teach my 9 months baby to sign "milk", "mom" and "more" like 2 weeks ago, also I bought flashcards from www.sign2me.com, and some DVDs such as My Baby Can Talk, Baby Einstein, See n' Sign, and many more... Because I was really enthusiastic. But now, when I sign to her, she is just like "Yeah, whatever!" and she does not pay attention. I am about to quit. Can someone give me some tips and tell me about the first month of your own experience? Because everyone says "Consistency is the key" and when you hear the successfully stories of other moms that teach their sons, everything seems pretty easy. Is something wrong with my baby?

PS. I know that my grammar is horrible, English is my second language (-_- ' )! Thanks everyone for taking the time to answer to me...

9 months is very early. It works but the first 3 months are just plain hard work and not much response. It has to click first. And it is easy... it just takes a looooonnnngggg time.

Be sure it remains a game to your kid. Like most of us they hate work. ;-)

I use signs with my daughter. She's now 22 months, says words and still uses some of her signs. I started using signs when she was 7 months old. I read a book and started with: more, drink, eat, tired, dog, cat & help. I spoke to her normally, I never used 'babytalk'. Just in every day situations, I used the word & the sign. She eventually started using them herself. It took at least several months for her to get it. She made up her own signs, variations of the signs I used. It took me a while to figure it out. Be patient, forget the dvds and flash cards. Pick a few signs, use them everyday and she'll get it. Once she has it, it will make life a lot easier and save you a few tantrums. Good luck.

keep at it. even when my kids were months old and said Da-da, Ma-ma, cup, drink or whatever...we wanted to see it over and over again, sometimes the kid is just tired of preforming and shuts down. try again later but not so intensely. don't give up (and that advice should last you through the teenage years as well) good luck to you and kudos for teaching your child other types of communication.
