In 1793, Britain went to war against France in what became known as the Napoleonic Wars. The United States was neutral during this conflict but hostilities between the two belligerents interfered with its trade. The Royal Navy blockaded French ports and obliged all neutral shipping, especially American vessels, bound for France, to call first at a British port and pay duties on its cargo before being allowed to proceed. Furthermore the Royal Navy frequently stopped United States ships and pressed into service those seamen who had either deserted from the Royal Navy or were vaguely suspected of having deserted. This policy so incensed United States officials, that on 18th June 1812, President James Madison declared war on Great Britain.

THe major issue was that the British Navy was stopping US ships and forcing US citizens to become sailors in the British Navy. The US demanded the return of all US citizens and an end to the practice of impressment. Great Britain agreed, but the war had begun before word of the agreement reached the US. The US also thought that Canadians would rise up and join the United States, and were honestly surprised when they resisted a US invastion.

The United States objected to British naval ships stopping American ships and pressing sailors into British naval service.

I believe it was also hoped that Canada might seek independence and join the U.S.

The timing was largely based on the fact Britain was tied down in a major war in Europe against Napoleon Bonaparte and his puppet nations.

It was felt this would dilute the power of the British to a point where Britain would not be able to win.

The war was fought from 1812 to 1815 on both land and sea. By the end of the war, 1,600 British and 2,260 American troops had died.[1]

Britain was at war with France and, to impede American trade with France [citation needed], imposed a series of restrictions that the U.S. contested as illegal under international law. The Americans declared war on Britain on June 18, 1812 for a combination of reasons, including: outrage at the impressment (conscription) of thousands of American sailors into the British navy; frustration at British restraints on neutral trade; anger at alleged British military support for American Indians defending their tribal lands from encroaching American settlers; and a desire for territorial expansion of the Republic.
