In such a question there is no specific correct answer.

I think your choice of invention is interesting and one that I wouldn't have considered.

But it would be a difficult one to directly research.

Don't look for information specifically on nuclear weapons, rather consider the whole cold war situation. There will be a lot of information on US influence on global politics. Also you can research US military strength.

I wouldn't go with the nukes, Russia had the same thing just a little while after we did and they have no more bullied there way into world wide influence than we have done.

I would say the modern car. Before the 20th century, cars were a huge commodity, so that you had either because you were very rich or you were Henry Ford and you made the car. But as mid 1900's come, more and more automobile manufactures start arising in America, and following WWII, we start importing rice burners. This would boom the American economy cause cars require so many things, especially fuel and maintenance, so other vender's like gas stations, garages, etc. would develop all over the place sense everyone began driving cars. Some popular automobile and ,their part makers, names like Micheline, GMC, Chrysler, Dodge, would arise as some of the largest businesses in the world, not to mention the nation. Politics changes as everyone is now mobile and they can be come proactive about things they feel strongly about, they can protest, they can campaign, what have you. Especially that relentless American voice starts uttering its first words because people can move around and see much more than what they could have before the affordable automobile maker.

Venders include: Union 76, Shell(which is now out of business), Acro, any big gas station. Then Pep Boys, Krieg Autobody, and then all the mom and pop dealers, used carsales, etc. It all stimulates the economy, but not so much as those first few, cause they sell gas and as gas begins to be come more expensive, we fight over it-Desert Storm. You can even claim Nam was influenced by this cause no one wanted to see the American economy go belly up, and the biggest American money maker at this time, aside from millitary equipment, was gas and cars.

There's a lot you can do with it.

Yes I know I'm smarter than these air-head adults.

I think, clear and away, the mass production of the automobile, and the invention of heavier-than-air aircraft, are the two inventions or occurrences of the 1900's that had the greatest lasting economic, social, and political impact on the United States. Just think what it would be like to travel without those inventions. Do you have any idea how difficult it was to get from New York to California in the days of overland stage coach or covered wagon? Today, it is a matter of hours.

The answers above have it right. Forget the atomic bomb idea.
The connection to economic prosperity is not very supportable.
As a history teacher, I like the computer idea and the transportation (automobile and airplane) ideas. Computerization and the internet might be best.
The impact on the world has been HUGE.
