Star Wars has made more money and has a larger fanbase, but not because it's better. It's aimed at a younger audience, and is more action/SFX-based than ideas/story-based. I love both but Star Trek (certainly the TV series which are more substantial than the movies) is more intellectually demanding than Star Wars. The original Trek had some of the top sci fi writers of the day contributing; SW aims to be fun and succeeds brilliantly. Thus SW is easier for more people to get into.

If I have to compare these two icons I always relate to the Battlefield vs Call of Duty. Basically it's the same. Battlefield is somewhat more serious while Call of Duty is just shoot and go. In Star Trek they don't fire all weapons (unless it's really necessary, against the Dominion etc), but it's more diplomatic. Meeting strange aliens, strange planets and or anomaly's, messing around with timetravel, but also some items which are now a reality. Star Trek inspires a lot of people to make a better world, to invent things which don't exist yet. (Damn, I want to order my holodeck). Star Wars on the other hand is blatant opera space action serie. It's to crowded for my taste. If there is a war than there are ten thousand lasers everywhere, and allthough those cityships look pretty awesome, they are extremely weak. In a technological sense Star Trek beats Star Wars by several hundreds of years and 1 galaxy class starship could roll up the entire Empire. But, if you love that kind of action than it's all your choice. We could better say, both Star Trek and Star Wars followers, we both love science fiction in space. And shooting spaceships.. ;-)

Easily Star Wars on all counts.Every single Star Wars movie is in the top 25 highest grossing films of all time. Not only that but when was the last time you went to a store and saw Star Trek toys. You can't go to a toy store without seeing star wars action figures or lightsabers. George Lucas has easily amassed way more money with Star Wars than Gene Rodenberry ever did with Star Trek.

Well I happen to love both. So this is a toughie for Me. Honestly Star Wars is probably a tad more popular. And I'm sure the Star Wars Films by themselves made more money. I have, however been a fan of both since Star Trek aired in 1967 and Star Wars hit the screen in 1977.

I would say Star Trek has a larger fan base, spinoffs and books (I own over 100 of them.) The Star Wars movies made more money and was spectacular on the screen. (Great graphics.) It also has more toys.

I'd say that Star Trek has more spin-offs, but Star Wars most certainly has grossed more money all together, has a larger fan base, and though I'm not sure how many Star Trek books have been written, I know that Star Wars has quite a large Expanded Universe created by fans that includes books, comics, video games and other things.
So, I'd say that Star Wars is more popular, by a long run, but Star Trek has been around longer and produced more visual media.

I think it is about a draw, there different views on which is better and why. I am a Star Trek person. I think are far as total movies and shows Star Trek would be out front, as far as earning goes, it would be close, Trek has been out there longer. We would have to ask The Roddenberry Family and the Lucus Family to see how they stack up on the money factor. Maybe the I.R.S. could provide the answer concerning the money!! LOL.

It's really hard to say which is more popular and which has made more money off of everything related to it. Both have huge, crazy fan bases, and both have a ton of merchandising.
I'm personally a Star Wars fan.
