how much will the trade the Tigers made today help the Tigers for the 08' season, a day after WS ends Tigers pick-up Edgar Renteria to play SS with Guillen switching over to 1B, trading 2 young future players SP Jair Jurrjens and A OF Hernandez to get Renteria

I think this trade makes Detroit a much more balanced team. Guillen was a Gold Glove Caliber SS moving to 1B. My thinking is that Guillen gets injured less and the dropoff, if any, on defense is negligible. As for the prospects, Jurrens to me is a NL pitcher, and is better served going over there. Don't know a thing about Hernandez, though Dombrowski is one of the best GM's in the game, so I'd be inclined to think that he figures that the losses can be absorbed.

The trade is pretty even as both teams got what they wanted and didn't hurt themselves by giving up anything that they can't replace. Renteria is an All-Star calibre shortstop and fills a need for the Tigers. Jurrjens has good potential to be the Braves fourth or fifth starter next season. Good trade for both teams!

I disagree with the last answerer. Doyle Alexander is not in the same class as Renteria - that's an insult to him.

Hernandez has exactly 0(zero) major league at bats and hasn't played above the single-A level. Not sure how you can mention him and the HOF in the same sentence.

I think the Tigers made a great move. I'm always in favor of getting a proven major league player (an all-star in this case) for prospects.

I think the Red Sox are still subsidizing part of Renteria's contract. If so, we reserve the right to boo him mercilessly when the Tigers are in Boston.

I think they needed a quality SS. Ramon Santiago wasn't going to cut it.

But isn't Renteria kind of a head-case?
