A few ideas:
Klutz makes a Superhero book for little kids (ages 4-6) that comes with a cape, paper masks and wrist guards, and funny superhero advice. I bought this for my 5-year-old cousin (a tomboy) and she was wearing the cape withing minutes.

I also agree with thinking outside the Spider-man box. Consider a Spider-man cuddle pillow. http://www.target.com/Spider-Man-Microfiber-Cuddle-Pillow/dp/B000NNEFJ6/sr=1-1/qid=1193732984/ref=sr_1_1/602-6708950-5752648?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Aspider-man%20pillow&page=1
or a set of Spider-man sheets

These Spider-Man cars are really cute--do NOT spend $15 on them, though--I've seen them in-store for $5 at Toys R Us and Target. http://www.amazon.com/Spider-Man-1-scale-Die-cast-cars/dp/B000OU6TM4/ref=sr_1_17/103-9253303-9392603?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1193733304&sr=1-17
There's a new, upgraded version of the Kid Tough Digital Camera--my niece has this, and loves it. http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Tough-Digital-Camera/dp/B000QULFQC/ref=pd_ts_t_27/103-9253303-9392603?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games
V-tech also has a new camera out. http://www.amazon.com/VTech-80-077300-Kidizoom-Digital-Camera/dp/B000NZORB0/ref=pd_ts_t_57/103-9253303-9392603?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games
I love anything from Fisher-Price's Imaginext collection, and pirates are still huge with the little ones:
http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Imaginext-Adventures-Pirate-Ship/dp/B000NW3LP6/ref=pd_ts_t_79/103-9253303-9392603?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games
Transformers are also HUGE right now--as in, flying off the shelf, can't restock them fast enough huge--but there's no telling if the 5-year-old you're buying for is actually into them. I'd ask his parents. Remember: All the kids may have "it," but the best toy for him may be something different.
Have fun!

spider man pyjamas, plate and glass set or spider man towel/blanket/rug, or u could get him a train set. if he likes to get messy, drawing book with some really cool markers? or play dough.
these stuff are all 'bought and tested', we got em for my little bro and he loved them. he is 5 too.

a 5 year old boy might like something more adventurous and cool to them.
they also like superheroes cause they think they are super.=)
and, try giving him something educational but also his favorite and fun!
like spider man storybook or colouring book.
they are cheap and good and might be the perfect present.
try not giving him something soft like a plushie. guys don't like soft toys.
hope you like my suggestion,
Wendy=)
