Is there any difference? A friend tried to briefly explain it, but he just made it more confusing. What is the difference?

I am sure there are multiple ways to explain it to non-technical person - here's what I suggest:

Password protection
Think a key to the safe box. Once you open the safe, you can read all secret documents inside if they are not encrypted.

Encryption
Think about different language. Even if you have the key and opened the safe, the documents inside are in different language or look like gibberish -you need to scramble letters or do something like that in order to understand what is written - i.e. you need to know how to de-crypt them in order to read them.

By making it encrypted it is more secure. Encryption deals with numbers and letters. Suppose my password is love. Encryption algorithm programs will change that into A1548398DDAAF more or less. there are different encryption methods like RCA, M5, SHA, and others which are created by people, CIA, NSA, and so on.

Password protecting is like putting a password on a simple webpage. Think of it as a bike lock. It is easy to crack.

Encryption is more secure because there are more characters.

I hope i explained it.
