You're right, the US does maintain its standard of living by monopolizing most of the world's resources, and there is great resentment over that, but it goes much deeper.
Like many on the religious right in the US, militant Muslims have great anxiety over the rapidly increasing secularizing of the world. They see traditional values being abandoned, women forgetting their place, young people having sex outside of marriage, gays being tolerated and even embraced, abortion becoming acceptable, and the love of money taking the place of the love of God. And when they look for the causes of these changes, the most powerful symbols they see are American music, American movies, American television, American attitudes. When they call America "The Great Satan," it's not just rhetoric. Like American fundamentalists, they feel that Satan must be at large in American culture for these things to be happening.
Add to this the forceful removal of Palestinians from their homes by an Israeli government that exists only because of American subsidies, the unprovoked American attack on Iraq, and the ongoing abuses at Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo and elsewhere, and the attitudes are not that hard to understand.

Because our country has been brainwashed to hate any culture that involves Islam. Do you know how many times I have heard negative comments involving the religion? Its almost like we're committing an act against a culture-- its frightening and for all the wrong reasons. Its become a war against people that we don't understand more so than people that are terrorists. Racial profiling is at an all time high and the government is even succumbing to it! Perhaps if we actually stopped being defensive about our own way of life and started actually listening and trying to find a negotiation, we wouldn't be plagued with suicide bombings every other day. I agree, there are extreme cases where its impossible to get them to stop until we leave them alone, but there are plenty of people in this world that simply want to be treated like HUMANS and not savages.

You don't just wake up one morning and hate the USA of sudden
- I can't tell you a reasoning valid for them all, for Palestinians
hating Israel it is easier to determine: A whole generation grew
up under war conditions, they are cornered and every individual
has lost a relative, partly in random shootings. Some say they'll
die anyway and why not take some of the bullies with them then.
Especially when the moral foundation of the west is undermined
by resorting to torture, disrespecting all contracts as well human
rights, religiously fanatics have an easy game often. A shame.

Amazing how many experts of foreign policy we have around here.
"Terrorists" does not actually refer to anyone specific. Our government refers to "the terrorists" as though they are a specific group. In reality, "the terrorists" are an invisible, fabricated concept of an enemy.
Islamic terrorists are people with said religious beliefs who carry out acts that are usually violent in order to try to spread a message. This message is stifled by our government, who instead tells us things like "they hate our freedoms, they want us all dead."
In my opinion, terrorists themselves tend to be passionate, but ultimately desperate and fairly gullible or uneducated people. It's hard to say why "they" hate us, and the answer depends on who you're actually referring to. Some certainly have hatred because of our military presence in their country. But others probably don't even really understand why they hate.
We could ask the same question of ourselves, however. Why do religious fundamentalists and many others in this country tend to show such hatred toward homosexuals? Why, as little as 40-50 years ago, did we still have such a pervasive, overt hatred of different races? Why do traces of this racism still exist?
Ultimately, I think the answer boils down to education.

You are going to get hateful answers for implying that our government has simplified the terrorists' hatred of us... The truth is that the Middle Eastern terrorists do not hate us for our "freedom" and "democratic principles." They hate us for our relationship with Israel (supporting them with military arms and advice and ignoring questionable legal processes to the Palestinians). They also have a longer memory than us... they remember who our allies were in that region: the Shah of Iran, Saddam Hussein (he was once a ally of the US), and the Saudi family. All of who were (and are... the Saudis) despots who imprison and torture their people while they bask in the riches that they have aquired from US businesses.
I am not sympathizing with the terrorists... I am just saying that their perspective is far from the simple reasoning of our government. To beat your enemies you must actually try to understand them... by understanding them you can accurately analyze their strengths and weaknesses. This acministration has completely underestimated them because they will not be honest with themselves. We have to be willing to understand our enemies to conquer them.

America has locked people up in Cuba without trial for years now, it has also supplied Israel with arms and nuclear technology but Denys Iran the right to nuclear power (Even though under international law they have the right because they ratified the nonproliferation treaty).America has also invaded and occupied Iraq in its war on terror and is still killing people over there (Even though Iraq never supported terrorism) . all these things have served to polarize the world community saying that they is a set of rules for everyone and another set for America also killing innocents in Iraq further adds fuel to the fire.

It does not matter why they hate us. Knowing why would not solve anything, nor would it matter. The simple fact is they hate us, and they want to kill you simply because you are not muslim. Their way of life is to kill and nothing else. Oh, by the way, terrorists own nothing and have nothing for anyone to 'bogard' their resources. They STEAL resources, or TERRORIZE othes to get what they want.
Question for you, would you ever consider negotiating with roaches infesting your home, or would you hire an exterminator? Once you answer this easier question, then apply it to the question on terrorism

"the terrorists" are us. sorry for bursting the bubble of many, but "the terrorists of 911 and the "reason" why we keep making war with countries in the middle east was decided in a boardroom filled with highly paid a-moral assholes. We the American people are paying greatly and will continue to pay if the people do not wake up and smell the fresh brew.
sorry! but anyone who has looked into the matter themselves will know this.

They hate their own governments and feel that they maintain their power because the US supports them. They resent Israel taking Arab land and the west's support for Israel and are humiliated they are too weak to stop it. The think American culture is corrupting their society and if they could return to the true faith, their economy and culture would prosper. They hope that by attacking the west and in particularly American to demonstrate to all Muslims that the west is weak and morally corrupt, and to provoke us into actions that will reveal for all to see the depth of our corruption and exploitation of the Muslim world.

They hate us for the same exact reasons that all right-wingers hate liberals.
Support of rights of gays.
Support of immoral acts, that do not harm anyone else.
Support of acts that do not agree with religious dogma.
Compared to Muslim theocracies, America is very liberal.
