I have a Desktop with Windows XP on on running 256 and I was thinking about adding more RAM to improve the system. I have never done any type of repair/upgrade like this before and was wondering:
1) How easy it is to do this type of upgrade for a beginner?
2) How expensive does it cost to upgrade?
3) What is the best upgrade RAM to go to?
Any tips or advice would be most appreciated!

1) it's easy, just take the outter cover of your computer off, you'll see this flat board that will most likely be standing on its side with a clamp at each end. there should be some empty slots next to it. just make sure the ram is facing the correct way..it will only fit one way, don't force it, then push it into place and close the clamps on it.
2) can cost anywhere from $15-$40 dollars.
3) i suggest adding a 512mb Ram stick

Installing it isn't as hard as figuring out exactly what type you need. You should be able to get the information from the motherboard's instruction manual or it's manufacturer's website. But failing that, you may actually have to pull out the RAM in there and just walk into the store with it to find out (I'd suggest going to a store that specializes in computer parts, not a big box store like Best Buy.

It's also important to find out how many RAM slots you have in your computer, so you know what options you have to purchase.

1) To remove the RAM chip, you just push down on the plastic tab on each side, which will make the chip pop up, then pull it out. Pretty simple

to put in the new one, you first have to look at the chip and line up the small gap in the connectors with a little bar in the chip slot (this is there to make sure you can't put the chip in backwards). Then most MoBos today just have you push the chip straight down, which will in the process swing those tabs up into place to hold the chip. This can take quite a bit of force, and I even occasionally get a little worried I'm going to snap it. The other option, which is a much older design, involves putting the chip in at about a 40-degree angle and swinging it up into a vertical position.

Overall, RAM is the easiest of the sensitive parts to change. But that doesn't mean there isn't reason to be cautious, particularly about static charges.

2) It's been a while since I checked, but it's probably about $50 per gigabyte for most standard types of RAM. High end stuff like the major gamers use tends to be 2-3 times as much for a similar amount.

3) Depends entirely on the motherboard.

What you can do is to ask at the shop in IT mall. I is easy for upgrade for a beginner. It will cost about 20 to 30. The best upgrade of Ram is to see how many spacd did you desktop has. It can go to 568.

With the current stuff out there, RAM should be at least 1GB. (Mine is only 512MB)
I upgraded only once; it was fairly easy, but the manufactuer's instructions were inaccurate!
As to the cost, well, brand new computers, laptops or desktops, with plenty of RAM and ROM and good Mhz cost less than upgrading, so my suggestion would be to buy a brand new computer, use the old one for back up or whatever.
