It might have something to do with the number of cats and dogs with claws that jumped on the bed. Friends of ours woke up one morning--swimming in water. lol

It's probably because they're so heavy that people decided they weren't worth it. Now people are all about the sleep number bed...with the water bed, your partner majorly affects what happens to your half....or the tempur pedic..I mean, did you see how that wine stays in the class on the commercial? Impressive, huh! No water bed could compare. Poor water beds. I did love them so.

Yep, it was an 80's thing. I used to have one but always woke up with a slightly sore back. I guess people realized a regular mattress is better.

We had a soft side waterbed that looked like a mattress with the tubes inside. I would get another one if I could find it! Warm in teh winter!! And go for, well you know...in bed!

The fad grew old when they started coming up with Swedish sleep systems, sleep number beds, and the fluffy pillowtop beds.

No, there was to much activity going on those beds maybe because couples were playing the captain and crew game. lol

Thats a good question. I totally forgot all about those. I guess they were replaced by air number beds and foam mattresses.

After a while, as I we got older, we started waking up with the "nagging stiff backache."
I had one in high school, back when they were new, and I had my mother call in school sick for me. She told them I had frozen to my waterbed!
...They didn't buy it.

Some people find they don't offer enough back support, and of course there's the risk of it getting a hole.
