my boyfriend heard somewhere that theres a planet or something (actually I'm not sure what it is) whose orbit will come close to the earth some time in the future and that it's gravity will be so strong it'll stop the earth's rotation for a couple of days!! wtf is that lol we're not sure if that's true or not or if that's even possible. According to what he heard it only happens once every i dont know how many years lol sorry not so helpful but i'm just completly in doubt of this.

no, there is no such planet, but it is possible that an asteroid could hit the earth and cause a catostophe - if large enough, ending most advanced life...that is probably what killed off the dinosaurs

well if it happened before, then the fact that the earth is still around proves it wouldn't doom the earth. Nothing other then a giant baseball mitt is going to stop the earth's rotation either, the best it could do is change the earths rotation.

Still, it is pretty easy to get facts wrong when you play telephone with science. I think the theory he's thinking of is that there is either a tenth planet or close-by star which gets near enough to disrupt the Oort cloud, causing periodic disruption of meteors and comets to come flying towards the inner solar system. This you have a convenient explanation for the several extinctions in Earth's history, most of which were believed to be directly or indirectly caused by asteroids.

As far as I know, it's just a theory. Even if it was true, the Earth has survived worse before, and even humankind would probably survive such a catastophe, it would just take a while to rebuild though.

Your boyfriend is a little bit gullable...
There are no "objects" in collision with Earth, at least not for many centuries to come.
For an object to stop the Earth from rotating, it would need to be HUGE (in mass): we would have seen it long ago.
The only thing that could happen is a meteor to hit Earth in a relatively close future. (see the movie Armagedon), but this is still very improbable.
However, should this happen with a meteor bigger than 10 km in diameter, life on Earth could (would) be in serious jeopardy! The meteor that fell in the mexican gulf, 65 millions years ago, was believed to be only 13km in size, and was the (most probable) cause of the extinction of the dinosaures.

You can play with some meteor sizes and see the effects!

desiguy and michael are correct. Nibiru is a fictitious planet written of in ancient Sumerian myth. It originally represented the planet Jupiter. Zacheria Stetchin wrote a book about it in the form of Erik Von Daniken's books from the 70's where everything he could not explain was somehow done by aliens. Unfortunately, some die-hard UFO nuts held out that Nibiru was real and of course is on it's way in 2012 along with all of the other fictitious events which psychics foresee. Nibiru was supposed to be here in 2003 also. It didn't happen so they picked a later date.

You can google Nibiru for more. Please choose your web sources wisely. There are many out there who want to deceive. Search for a scientific and unbiased site for proper information.

It's not the end of the earth.

It might be the end of my hope that some 80% of Americans have any amount of education worth mentioning or that they are able to distinguish truth from utter nonsense.

The sad part is, that all the people who can believe this nonsense also can vote for politicians who will have access to the keys to the nukes.

Somehow that scares me, at least lately.

I believe he was talking about the asteroid Apophis that's due to pass the earth closer than some of our communication satellites in 2029. If it passes though a very tiny, specific area, window in space, then there is a chance it may come back around & hit in 2039. The chance of Apophis passing thorugh the narrow area of space (threading the neddle) is around 2%.

Anyone with an even basic grasp of science and astronomy can see that this whole "Planet X"/"Nibiru" concept has more holes than a block of Swiss cheese. It's cobblers.

I think your bf was talking about planet NIBURU or known as planet X. You may wanna google about it - it was promulgated by Zecharia Setchin as he interpreted from the sumerian text. This is a very loaded answer so you will have to research all what I have said ..sorry I cannot re write his whole theory here.

This is complete nonsense. There is no such planet known, and stopping the Earth's rotation would be impossible to do.

Ehem..... this is maybe a rumor! Wake up yourself! But , maybe this "thing" will come true somehow.... But, does NASA report anything? NOPE! So please dont feel that this is the doom of earth, okay? There's no proof!
