Are there certain teachers I should ask? For instance, do colleges like letters from core class teachers like the sciences or math? Or are electives ok? How many letters of recommendation do I need? Do all colleges require one from your counselor?

Not all colleges specify that one of your letters be from a counselor (in my case this would have been absurd, because my counselor was useless), but they want to see letters from people who know you really well on an academic level and who can testify to your being able to handle rigorous academic work, unless your planned major is something like theater or art, in which case someone in that area would be expected. If your elective courses are something like economics or social studies, you would be okay, but not something like home ec or drill team.

I would stick with the core unless you have some special talent in music or art.

most would advise you to choose one science/math teacher...and one English/social studies teacher

For most colleges you need 2 teacher recs, many colleges need a letter from your counselor

most colleges don't require them, but any teacher would be fine.
