A State Supreme Court Judge has ruled that Buffalo discriminated against 13 white firefighters who were passed over for promotions.

There's only one thing that makes you fit for the firehouse says Buffalo Firefighter Gene Margerum.

"You want the highest trained, most qualified guy showing up, not someone who's getting a paycheck," he said.

So Margerum hit the books, studying for two years to become a lieutenant. He passed the test, but never got promoted. According to court documents, that's because of the color of his skin.

"I know what it's like to be discriminated against now, and it hurts and it makes you angry," he said.

So what happened? According to court papers, the city let the promotions list expire so it could promote more African American firefighters. That list is the subject of a federal lawsuit claiming it discriminates against women and minorities. The city's attorney, Adam Perry, says that's why Buffalo needs to address the issue of racial imbalance in the fire department.

Racism must be stopped and eliminated especially in the workplace.

I cannot believe that racism still exists. First of all, I don't believe too much of what the media spits out to the public and secondly, did it ever occur to any of you ignorant people that maybe the Blacks who were promoted, deserved it. How many Whites have already been promoted over the Blacks? It's time for a change, it's time to mix things up a bit. And to the one that said many Whites died in the Civil War for the rights of Blacks, maybe you need to research a little bit more on the Civil War. The Civil War was not based on Civil Rights for Blacks, if that was case then slavery wouldn't have existed after the Civil War (which it did) . Also did you ever think about how many Blacks died in the Civil War? And to all of you that think Affirmative Action is so bad, maybe other races and sexes are tired of seeing White Men with all the great jobs. Affirmative action allows equal rights for minorities and women and if you don't like, Oh Well......

So the problem is affirmative action?

Hundreds of years of slavery, a hundred years of lynching and unconscionable treatment, and that means nothing now. How quickly we forget. I was barely alive when the civil rights movement started. Thats not that long ago.

It was during Ronald Regan's reign that Grand Wizard David Duke (a Louisiana House representative) made a serious run for the senate, or was that to long ago to remember? Many of you probably revere Ronald Regan. Do you know where he made his announcement to run for president? or why that is important?

You don't see alot of open racism today. But that does not mean it's gone. Yes, a few white guys didn't get a promotion. I am so sorry.

I guess two wrongs make a right, liberal philosophy

we all know its wrong, but nobody does anything about it, we paid our debts to the black community with 600000 dead in the civil war end of story,

No race has ever been fought so hard for than the american black. Give me one other example where a nation sacrificed over a half-million people for the rights of others.............none, but we did and whites are still paying the price.

That's why I don't agree with that bs "affirmative action." Many a qualified person was passed over because of this, including myself.
