Usually a 50/50 mix. Follow the directions on the anti-freeze. They even sell pre-mixed now. You just pour it in. Using distilled water is a good idea to keep the system cleaner if you don't buy the pre-mixed.
Most car manufacturers recommend adding a leak sealer as a preventative measure and this may extend the life of some gaskets. A new cap every few years can prevent air from repeatedly being drawn into the system which has been known to cause sludge problems in some vehicles.

Modern cars an light duty trucks hold on average 10 -14 total quarts of coolant.
I always consult the handbook in the glove compartment to learn first the total capacity of the cooling system in quarts.
#1.First pour in 1/2 the total cooling capacity with 100% antifreeze first. #2. Fill the remainder of the radiator with distilled water. Start the car with the cap off for 5 - 10 minutes to make sure the air has purged from the radiator, block and cylinder heads. If the coolant drops inside the radiator fill it up, put the pressure cap on and fill the coolant recovery tank to the full line. After a few heat cycles the level of the water in the reservoir will drop as the system purges itself of air.
The reason I add half the total capacity with 100% is you never can be sure the block is 100% empty of flush water or old antifreeze before you start to refill the system. By adding half the capacity with 100% you know positively that you're protected to -38 below zero Farenheight.

well if it says it is low, then yes you want to put dex-cool antifreeze coolant into your radiator because your coolant is low... Im not sure if dex-cool is required to do a 50-50 water to coolant ratio, but it will say it on the back of the bottle of dex-cool for what you should do... Deffinitly have something wrong with you coolant/radiator if its overheating and your truck says the dex-cool level is low The coolant would go into the radiator which is in the front most part of the car, in front of the fan in your engine compartment... There should be a radiator cap on the top, and be sure your engine is COOL before you start to take that cap off because of high pressure

Add antifreeze til it seems full. Leave the cap off, start up the car , slightly accelerate the engine. Add antifreeze as needed. Leave the car run 10 minutes, always with the cap off, it will get to a point when you top off the coolant and you accelerate the car the level does not go down, this means is full ! put the radiator cap back on, you're all set !

One gallon is sufficient unless you live in an area where temps go to near sub zero temperatures.
