I stumbled on this site not long ago and for the most part I'm impressed with what this site accomplishes, but I have noticed one HUGE side effect.
Why do people insist on answering questions (almost verbatim) that have already been answered? Do I really need to know 12 times that the X + 2 = 3 so X = 1? Why isn't this SPAM? Do they not notice it has already been answered? I think the reason they answer it is because it makes them, somehow, feel smarter then they actually are? Statistically we konw this isn't true, so stop doing it.
You don't have to look far to see what I'm talking about. And while I'll grant you that sometimes people are responding at the same time, if you notice the time stamps you'll notice this isn't quite true. So, can someone explain this phenomenon to me????
And just to make you feel smart, why don't you answer this riddle.
8, 91, 27, 64, 73... what number comes next ( it's a 2 step elddir)

its Fibonacci Numbers!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with the second and fourth reversed. So the sequence should be 8, 19, 17, 46, 73....so the next number would be 46 + 73 which is 119.

There is a lag in the system, the time stamp does not tell the whole story. There can be up to a minute between hitting the submit button and system wide display. I've noticed this when answering questions that initially had no answers, but has up to three with different time stamps when my answer is displayed on my computer.

two words: points system.
They take the easy shots, that have already been answered to maximise points.
I've noticed that too, i especially find it amusing when someone asks for a song title. and some answers so the subsequent answers include something irrelevent like the entire lyrics, background info, or a link to the video.
because they think that maybe that will get them the ten points.
i don't know the answer to that riddle. I have no comprehension of number things. lol.

Well if people do answer more questions to make themselves feel smarter, it could also backfire because someone can give your answer a "thumbs down."
I think it has something to do with the points system. Some people would jump on any easy opportunity to gain two points.

Are you saying that you don't understand that many opinions are being given by different people on one question, and then votes are taken to choose the best answer? That is why there are many answers....we have many opinions. And I don't look at the other answers...just give my own. Never look at them until maybe later after they are chosen.
It is not that we think we are smarter...just that we might have a point of view that has not been considered...based on who we are, our experience of life, etc.

You get docked 5 points to ask a question and only get two for answering them. Therefore, you have to answer a lot of questions worthlessly. It's a stupid system.
