It was launched by the Soviet Union (Russians). The U.S was shamed and frightened by the apparent technical Superiority of the Russians and started a race to the Moon, which the U.S won in 1969.

The Russians launched Sputnik 1 50 years ago,it was the first artificial satellite and it was considered to be the dawn of the space age. Sputnik 2 carried a dog as a passenger to test the effects of space travel on living creatures.

The dawn of the space age was also the start of the race between the USSR and USA to get humans into space and then to the Moon. Russia succeeded in placing the first human in space while the US place the only human explorers on the Moon.

The original Sputnik did not actually transmit much data, it was more of a showcase for space technology. Subsequent satellites (both Russian and American) transmitted data regarding the Van Allan belts and the composition of the Earths atmosphere. The global network of communication, science and weather satellites all owe their origins to Sputnik.

Research for a project isn't conducted by asking someone else to do it for you. There are plenty of informational sources on the net that you can use as a resource.
