If you want the most possible fish, look into Dwarf Cichlids like Rams, Apistos, and Kribs (Kribs are African Cichlids, but they are naturally found in water parameters almost identical to those of South America). A couple pairs of each would be spectacular in a well planted, natural setup. For the maximum number of fish, you would want to do 3 pairs of Rams and some smaller, schooling fish for the middle and upper regions of the tank, such as Tetras, Danios, Hatchetfish, Barbs, or Rasboras (Tetras, Rasboras, and Hatchetfish are South American, while Barbs are from Asia). Email me if you have any questions.

the 1 inch per gallon rule is really not an accurate theory. i doubt 2 15'' fishes can survive in a 30 gallon tank better yet make a turn. i'm not sure what new world means, i usually see it seperated by africans & south americans. heres a good site that i picked up here http://www.aqualandpetsplus.com/Cichlid,%20Jack%20Dempsey.htm
there is a pretty good range of cichlids you can check out. w/ a 30 gallon tank, you may want to focus on their maximun growth. like the ppl above said, dempeys are nice but they grow out to be 8''-12'' and will prolly be too snug in a 30 gallon. I own a 29 gallon so i had to limit my cichlids to ones that were 4-6'' max at growth.

http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/categ.cfm?pcatid=830 This is a great site to pick through New World species, as well as comparable prices. With a 30gal. like you have, it could hold about 6-8 cichlids with a couple of bottom feeders to help keep things clean. Use the 1in fish=1gal. water rule. One suggestion is to get the cichlids all about the same size, the smaller the better. 35yr fish exp

Good answer from guy above, only I would recommend that if buying convicts be sure NOT to get male & female. They will mate under any condition and the pair will reserve half the tank for their young. This results in a tank with all the fist huddled in one corner and two convicts swimming around.
I have an Oscar which is awesome, but very big and aggresive. Even he is kept at bay by the convicts. Jack dempsys are nice
I would also recommend "yellow labs" They are small and vibrant yellow in color.
Be sure not to mix american with african breeds
have fun

the answer is easy to remember. one inch of fish per gal. tank. so if you have a 30 gal. tank then you can have as many fish as you want as long as they only add up to 30 inches collectively. the reason for this is that if you have too many inches of fish they will die one by one of stress untill the numbers are at a more appropriate level. yes its true, they will die of stress! don't forget to run your tank for a while to get the pH correct before you add any outside life to your tank. any pet store that has a fish section can help you with how to get pH to a good point. good luck, fish are not easy in the beginning.

I've never heard "New World" but I'll guess!
My favorite are Convicts-They are great, they mate fairly successfully and really mature into beautiful fish.
Firemouths- I love the colors and how cool they look when they are "fired-up".
Jack Dempsey's- They are just bad ***! They are bad looking and really develop some great color!
All these fish I just mentioned get along but the Jack's will be the Alpha's!
