Redlining frequently will greatly shorten the life of your engine. Think of it as trying to pedal a bike to fast. At some point your legs will not be able to keep up with the speed an your feet will slip off the pedals. Your engine is similar except that when it "gives up" it will be a lot more messy and costly. My friend did that to his car and the rod punched right through the block and made a 2 inch whole. New engine required.

red lining is harsh on your crankshaft and connecting rods/pistons. I wouldnt recommend it. And for those of you out there with Rev limiters, realize that those things are nasty for your valves. I've seen too many bad examples of valves being snapped off the stem from them limiters, and then blown through the piston. Whether you have a rev limiter or not, red lining is bad, so keep the rpms in the black or orange at most.

It strains it excessively and if you like throwing rods through the block go right on ahead and do it but it does get very expensive when you are constantly replacing engines. Unless the car is specifically built to turn high RPMs and it is for racing I wouldn't do it but it is your car so do what you will with it.

redlining is no big deal as long as you have the money to buy a new engine when you break it

You have to consider many things with your car. How old is it, how many miles, has it ever had to have rings changed, a head rebuilt etc. Say its a ride that has never had any work done to it then you should be fine, just make sure it always has the neccesary amount of oil because that is where the problem lies. Tell your friend that red lining isnt a big deal as long as you have a good motor oil with a high viscosity.

If you keep driving your car past 4000 RPM's on a daily weekly basis , it won't be long till you throw a rod

its pretty hard on an engine, when you red line one this means your running the maximum the engine should be run at,so doing this too many times can blow the engine up,the older the car is the better the chance of doing harm to it,any engine will blow though, even the best built cars wont stand a lot of red lining, good luck with it.

It probably won't hurt it, providing your car has a rev limiter on it and it's working correctly, but it certainly isn't going to do it any good. Don't worry about it if you redline it occasionally, but don't do it on purpose.
