I was reading an article in Time about how, despite rising gas prices and environmental fears, SUV's have actually been enjoying increasing sales. The journalist commented that Americans probably won't wake up until they're regularly paying over $100 every time they fill up. Gas mileage currently ranks #21 on the average American's important things to look for when purchasing a car. I find that disgusting. I don't think anyone will do anything when it reaches $10 a gallon except continue to complain. I don't think anything will change until car companies are forced to make alternative vehicles because of more rigorous government standards.

If Bush was in power, then I'd say invade another country with huge oil reserves and secure the oil for America's consumption. It's much easier than implementing alternative fuel source vehicles.

We would have to economize! Few remember it now, but we had to change our economy during WWII, and it will happen again within the next couple of decades. That's because of the Islamists' rising in the East, not because of any lack of resources.
Of course, we need to be trying out alternatives to help keep us going.
