I also agree that contemplation is at the root of understanding foreign cultures. It is too simple an analysis to reflexively evaluate peoples from distant lands by our own standards, for our standards have arisen due to circumstances that are present here but may well not be present elsewhere. In fact, I would say it is a shame that so many fail to include contemplation in their daily lives much at all, let alone with respect to something as complex as relating with members of different backgrounds and cultures.
Having said that, I would suggest that those who contemplate foreign cultures should recognize the need for data to contemplate. People should not contemplate in a vaccuum but would do well to learn of other cultures through reading, communicating with its members and, when possible, traveling to it. After all, an unresearched point of view surely must be be less profound than a researched one.
With respect to developing mutual understanding, it cannot be emphasized enough that, in the end, human beings are human beings regardless of culture. We all have the same task of trying to survive on this planet, and most of us have learned that doing so is far easier if we learn to live with each other and work together to our mutual benefit. However, regardless of this similarity, appreciating and accounting for cultural differences is necessary to bridge the gaps between peoples so that communication, mutual understanding and teamwork can take place.
Peace on earth. Good will to all.

A contemplative life is no substitute for living amoung other
cultures and becoming an intregal part of them.. But I agree
that the first step to this is deep thought and preparedness
for new and changing experiences in one's life. The more
one studies or travels, the more the all inclusive bigger
picture comes into view. A bright and curious mind will
always have the advantage of truly understanding humanity
from many perspectives. I always tell people to get out
there and experience the fantastic gift of learning
new languages, tasting new foods, seeing amazing and
fantastic places. I'm proud to say I've sent my share of
international neophytes out there. Some of them are
still living in other countries. Good question Rena.

Yes. The deeper one contemplates, the more profound their revelations become. Those that contemplate naturally live life in a living meditation. Contemplation is a step beyond meditation as it means one meditates naturally without having to do so as a discipline.

I do agree with this! I'll add that near death experience also open you doors you never though of. Profound suffuring is another way to opens ones eyes. T.M. seriously applied leads to the understanding that we're all under One intelligence, which removes countries, cultures, religions, skin color. We, in the end are one and the same.

Only if part of what your contemplating is your own life. With out making sure that your life is as in order as it can be. Than contemplating the rest of the world might make sense and help you get a grasp of the parts of the world and cultures that you aren't familiar with. But with out knowing your self it's an exercise in futility.

Not at all. I believe the more languages you speak the greater your understanding of ours. Contemplation is for philosophers that like to sit on their hands and point out everything that's wrong with the world or how the world works. I always tell my son the more languages you speak the smarter you are. If you know 1 + 1 = 3 then and you can express it in many languages then you're smarter than the kid that knows the same thing but can only express it in one language.

And deeper even still, an awareness of the Nature and ones place and function in relation to the Nature. Thoughts are not the mind, they are "in" the mind. Mind is a vast emptiness as is space, yet with fullness. Opposites are complimentary! That is for contemplation. Peace.

FOR real.. The more power, money, etc one has the less he or she cares about lower class people. Those with money dont give a rats behind how anyone else is..they are just trying to make their beds feathered softer. They dont try to help anyone who is in dire needs. YEP bones are the same color, and the last time I looked we all sleep and take our britches off one at a time..LOL Good Q Rena.

Contemplation without discovery and learning will not make you more understanding or knowledgeable about people or anything else. You must SEEK out knowledge - only through that do you grow. Do not be passive.
