Presuming that there are 12 cokes in a case then.

Joe bought 1/2 case so he bought 6 and gave 1/6 away, which means he gave away 1 to Sam.
Mary bought 1/3 case, so she bought 4 and gave 1/4 away, so she also gave away 1 to Sheila
So Sam and Sheila both have a coke each.
So the answer is they have the same number.

say a case of cokes is 144 bottles.
(1/2) 144 = 72
Joe then gives (1/6), or 12, bottles to sam
Mary has (1/3), or 48, cokes and gave away 12 to sheila
sam and sheila both have the same amount of cokes

You already got your answers. Next time, start with simple number like 12 or 24 in a case. Convert every statement in mathematical step for this specific number. Then proceed further. Once you have come to the conclusion, go back and generalize your steps. This way you will learn the logical steps for the next homework you receive.
