To check whether the Hardware is working properly follow the steps given below:

1. Start Menu > Run
2. Type "dxdiag" in the Run
3. DirectX Diagnostic Tool Opens
4. Goto Tab 'Sound'
5. Test the Sound

If the test is successful your sound software and hardware are correctly working otherwise I think you have to change the speakers.

Sound problems develop when the unit has been exposed to moisture or metallic shavings have found their way inside the transducer grill work. Try plugging an external headset in, if the sound is proper your computer sound output is probably okay, it's more than likely your speaker (transducer).

maybe your computer's volume is turned down, I don't just mean your speakers. Try going to your control panel and finding "sound". Then check the volume there. If that is not the problem, I'm not sure what is wrong.

take it to the Toshiba dealer and get it repaired, or else replace the soundcard, but take it to a authorized dealer only, even if it costs you few bucks more
