ok, so i am in 8th grade. I am taking 2 high school classes (phy. science and algebra 1) and I am doing well, except in algebra, but i am working on that. Anyways, i want to become an Emergency Room doctor. I want to go to UT but i need to do more i think. Like study for the SATs and ACTs and MCATs. but i want to score really high. If someone could help me stir in the right direction, so to speak, that would really help. I only want to do 7 years of college, so i got to start doing something now.
oh yea i am volunteering at an Emergency room this summer, so i will have community service hours too.

thank you for your time

You don't really have to start now. You have time. Just focus on school and do well in your classes. Do extracurricular activities that focus on medicine. Often there are summer programs offered to students that focus on different careers. Trust me, you have plenty of time. When you get into 9th grade start studying for the PSAT and then the SAT and ACT. Make sure you take them on time (check with your high school guidance counselor then). By the time you get to college your plans could totally change. When I was your age I had my heart set on being an equine veterinarian. When I got to high school and college I found that math was really my thing. I am now finishing my undergraduate degree in applied mathematics with a minor in biology and I'm writing an honors thesis on mathematical modeling of virotherapy. It's not where I thought I would be, but I love it. Keep your options open. At your age, it's the best thing you can do.

You can take advanced placement courses that allow you to test for college credits when you get in high school. My school allowed juniors and seniors to take them, I don't know about your school. Your high school guidance counselour should be able to point you in the right direction for course work, I'd recommend taking as many honors courses as possible and colleges also want to see well rounded students. So volunteering is good and you may want to add a club or sport or something like that. There are also different programs to help you achieve better test scores. Since your in 8th grade I'd concentrate on the SAT for now or ACT (I believe it's a regional preference as to which you take).

Get an SAT prep book and start working through it page by page. Its not exciting or glamorous, but its worth the practice. You could also take an SAT prep course if you have the time. I can't remember the name of the book...it was a long time ago, but I used a test preparation book to get ready. Actually it helped me a lot all through college. It had statistics and tips about which answer to pick if you absolutely don't know the answer and why. Also tips about completing questions and in what order, that kind of thing. Check the college prep section at the local book store. Good luck.

It's really good that you are starting early getting ready for college. You're on a good track right now, and keep on it. Take some advaced/honors courses when you get into high school, but over-load yourself doing so, you know your strengths. Also if colleges come to your school talk to the representatives, and sign up to be on their mailing list, even if it's somewhere you never thought about attending, keep your options open. When you get to your sophmore year, you can take a test called the PLAN, it's a pre ACT and I would strongly reccomend taking it. There is also a pre SAT you can take in high school.

I hope this helps :)

Given your goal, it's a good idea to do that volunteer work at the emergency room. Keep that up during your high school years.

Take rigorous high school courses, study and work hard. Prep for the SATs and (if UT needs them) SAT Subject Tests. Or the ACT.

Well keep going. Into Geometry and biology next year, Trig and Chemistry the next year. STatistics if your school teaches in in the year after.

You need strong math and chemistry and biology skills and your voulennteer work is good.

You might need a langauge, check the college to see if they require a second langauge if you pick one.

Spanish is a major one for the US, but French is an internatinal one.

You going to work over summer school in college or take 4 quaters at a quarter school.

You have to get college out of the way as Med School, they expect you to be there over the summer, it's not manidtory, it may not even get your a grade but you are expected to live there for 4 years before interning.

Too early to worry about MCATs. Take ACT now, which is what UT takes. You can borrow the practice exams from the library or buy a book of them. The thing there is to feel comfortable with the exams and learn to pace yourself.

Take as many hard classes in high school as you can, especially math and science. Take the highest level of biology, chemistry and physics that your school offers. Take as many lab classes as you can.

Its great that you have an idea of what you want to do, but dont confine yourself. Think more about saving for college rather than already thinking of what college to go to. Take your time and dont even start researching until around junior year. Enjoy high school first before worrying about college. Best of Luck!

Wow......My advice is to study a lot, do well in class, and test yourself on the SATs etc. You're thinking too far ahead. It's a good thing to plan, but don't get too stressed over it. Try to apply for some scholarships and do math team, science olympiad, or sports.
